Crash's Story

You may recognize Crash as the dog “crashing” through the water on our homepage! In the summer of 2016 Crash began limping on his left rear limb after playing with his housemate. He returned to normal with a few days of rest, but about a month later after a field test he began limping on his right rear limb. Once again with a few days of rest, Crash returned to normal. Crash and his mom continued to train, but every once-in-a-while, she would notice that things were not quite right with Crash. In September 2016, Crash came to see Dr. Edinger to make sure that continuing training was not injuring him further. After a thorough physical exam and radiographs, Crash was diagnosed with bilateral cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) tears.
In October 2016, it was decided that Crash would undergo an arthroscopy on each of his knees followed by Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomies (TPLO’s). Both of his cruciate ligaments were found to be more than 70% torn. Surgery was uneventful and he was a champion through anesthesia. Crash’s family chose our RECOVERY STAY™ program, so that after surgery, Crash stayed with Edinger Surgical Options for 2 weeks to jump start his recovery. In our RECOVERY STAY™ program, Crash received daily rehabilitation with HEAL Integrative Veterinary Center (HEAL), which included laser therapy, massage, icing, passive range of motion, and floor exercises. Staying in our hospital provided Crash a stable and supportive environment for his initial recovery. He had 24 hour monitoring to prevent any licking or activity bursts that could have jeopardized his surgery.
When Crash returned home 2 weeks after surgery, he looked like a dog that was 4 weeks into recovery. His family diligently continued to work on his rehabilitation exercises at home three times a day, and visited HEAL weekly for laser therapy, floor exercises, and underwater treadmill work. By 8 weeks after surgery Crash was walking normally, and Dr. Edinger released him into HEAL’s guidance to continue rebuilding his muscling.
